The Golden Kingdoms

Mask depicting the feline deity with human figures, 800–550 BC. Peru. Cupisnique-Chavín. Gold. 14.6 x 21.2 cm. Museo Kuntur Wasi, San Pablo. Ministry of Culture of Peru.

"Golden Kingdoms: Luxury and Legacy in the Ancient Americas" traces the development of metallurgy in the Andes and its expansion northward into Mexico. This major international exhibition, presented at the Metropolitan Museum in New York , explores the notion of luxury in the pre-Columbian Americas, particularly by examining the associations between materials and their meanings, from around 1000 B.C. to the arrival of Europeans in the early 16th century.

In addition to gold and silver objects, the exhibition will highlight works of art made of shell, jade and textiles: materials that were just as precious to the Pre-Columbians as noble metals. A wonderful opportunity to discover the most beautiful objects from the ancient cultures of the Americas and to rethink our way of considering materials, the world of luxury and the role of the visual arts in ancient societies.
