Did you know that Checan , in the Muchik language, means “love”?
It is also the word chosen by Rafael Larco Hoyle as the title of his work on sexual representations in the Andean world.
After 14 months of closure to the public due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Museo Larco reopened its doors to the public on May 18, International Museum Day and the birthday of Rafael Larco Hoyle, founder of the museum. Despite the exceptional closure of this great Lima cultural institution, the museum team under the direction of Ulla Holmquist, has chosen to continue to enhance its collection by completely renovating its Erotic Gallery and offering visitors a new museum experience that is unique in the world.
Installed in a space three times larger than the previous one and designed around a new museography, the visit to "this gallery offers a global and organic vision of human sexuality, of our bodies and of the experience of desire and pleasure as forces necessary for the encounter and permanent regeneration of life on this earth" , comments Ulla Holmquist, director of the Larco Museum.
The objective of this permanent exhibition goes beyond the simple representation of sexuality. Designed around a selection of cutting-edge works and presented in 7 languages, the visit to the new Erotic Gallery immerses us with refinement in the intimacy of the Andean cosmovision, as evidenced by a scene of mythological copulation between Ai Apaec and Mother Earth who generates a tree of life, represented on a Mochica ceramic (100-800 AD).
For non-experts, the curious and for all ages, the exhibition is intended to be educational, aesthetic and inspiring, thus facilitating the understanding of the sexuality of ancient Peruvians during the visit. Indeed, far from being anecdotal, sexuality was an integral part of their cosmovision; it was linked to fertility but also to the opposing and complementary forces that when they meet are regenerative of life.
